Asheville Tourists News Release
(Asheville, NC) - The Tourists and Intimidators played game three of their four-game series Saturday, with Kannapolis coming out on top, 8-1. The teams combined for 24 hits in the contest, but all 10 for Asheville were singles, and they could only manage the one run.
Kannapolis starter Charlie Leesman won his South Atlantic League-leading 12th win of the season, going 7.0 innings and scattering 10 hits while allowing just one run. Leesman outpitched Asheville's Jonnathan Aristil, who lasted just 4.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, including two homeruns.
The Intimidators gave Leesman an early 3-0 lead in the second inning with three runs, highlighted by a two-run opposite field homerun by 2009 draft pick Josh Phegley. Brandon Short also homered for Kannapolis in the third inning to make the score 4-0.
The Tourists got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff single by Jordan Pacheco. Kiel Roling ripped one into right field that went all the way to the wall, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Pacheco advanced to third on the play, and Mike Zuanich drove him in with a broken bat single up the middle to make it 4-1. It was the sixth RBI of this series for Zuanich, who is now batting .424 in 21 games as a Tourist.
Tyler Trice came on to relieve Aristil and pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen before handing the ball to Isaiah Froneberger. After a scoreless seventh, Froneberger allowed two runs to score in the eighth following a controversial call. With a runner on second and one out, Dan Black hit a chopper to first base. Zuanich fielded and flipped to Froneberger, who appeared to touch first before the baserunner. Base umpire Jacob Danielson ruled Black safe, leading to a Joe Mikulik ejection, and putting runners on the corners. The Intimidators would take advantage, plating two runs off Froneberger and adding another off Kurt Yacko to take a 7-1 lead. They would add another off Michael Marbry in the ninth to make it 8-1.
The Tourists (30-16) and Intimidators (29-18) will play the finale of their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 2:05. RHP Alan DeRatt (1-2, 5.34) will start Sunday for Asheville against Kannapolis RHP James Albury (2-0, 4.71). Tickets for Sunday's game are available by contacting the McCormick Field Box Office at (828) 258-0428.
