Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC - Kannapolis snapped their three game losing streak and maintained their slim grasp on first place with a critical 8-1 win over the Asheville Tourists on Saturday night at McCormick Field.

Charlie Leesman (12-4) fired seven strong innings and allowed just one run to become the South Atlantic League's first 12 game winner. The southpaw did surrender 10 hits, but also struck out seven with one walk. Leesman has now won each of his last eight decisions.

Kannapolis gave Leesman plenty of early support, as the Intimidators took a 4-0 lead after three innings. Josh Phegley got the scoring going with a two run homer off of Asheville's Jonathan Aristil (2-8), his seventh long ball of the year. Brandon Short also homered for the fifth time this season off of the Tourists starter.

The Intimidators piled on late, scoring four runs over the last two innings to put it away. Eduardo Escobar had the biggest late knock, scoring two with a two-out triple in the eighth to seal the win.

Drew O'Neill and Dan Remenowsky each threw a perfect inning, as the Kannapolis staff sat down the last eight hitters in order.

West Virginia took a 5-4 win in Lexington, meaning the Kannapolis lead atop the Northern Division sits at just one game with 23 to play.
