Crawdads halt Hot Rods with 6-2 win

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Hickory Crawdads got on the winning track with a 6-2 victory against the Bowling Green Hot Rods before 4,053 fans at Bowling Green Ballpark on Saturday evening.

For the second straight game, both squads struck for a run in the second inning, leaving the game tied, 1-1, through two. The Crawdads (22-25, 55-61) scored first against RHP Joe Cruz (4-7) in the top of the inning, when 3B Matt West led off the frame with a double to right-center field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by DH Eric Fry. LF Cristian Santana then bounced a ball to second for an RBI ground out that brought in West and made it 1-0.

Bowling Green (26-20, 60-56) came right back with a run against RHP Wilfredo Boscan (6-6) in the bottom of the second to square the score. 3B Isaias Velasquez began the inning with a base hit and scored on a double by RF Jason Corder.

The Crawdads got back in front with another run in the top of the fourth, when DH Eric Fry hit a solo homer over the right field wall. However, Bowling Green again tied it up, striking for a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by LF Justin Reynolds that brought in Velasquez and made it 2-2.

Hickory retook a lead with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth. C Doug Hogan extended the frame with a double down the left field line and then promptly scored on an RBI single by RF Jared Bolden to center field. Bolden swiped second base before coming home on an RBI base hit by West down the right field line, putting Hickory ahead, 4-2.

The Crawdads extended their lead with two insurance tallies in the top of the ninth. Hogan led off the inning with his 16th bomb of the season, a solo shot to left field. West then got back on board with a one-out single, his third hit of the game, and stole his way to second base. With two away, Santana ripped a pitch down the left field line for an RBI double to bring in West and put the Crawdads ahead, 6-2.

RHP Cody Eppley and LHP Yoon-Hee Nam combined for two scoreless innings through the seventh and eighth, before RHP Matt Nevarez closed out the 6-2 win with a shutout bottom of the ninth. Boscan earned the win for the Crawdads, while Cruz was tagged with the loss for the Hot Rods.
