Bowling Green Cave Shrimp fall to Crawdads in Crustacean Battle

(Bowling Green, KY) - Jason Corder stayed red hot with another pair of doubles on Saturday night as the Bowling Green Cave Shrimp made their 2009 debut on What Could've Been Night. However, the Cave Shrimp were left wondering ‘what if' as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Hickory Crawdads(22-25, 55-61) in front of 4,053 fans at Bowling Green Ballpark. The loss snaps Bowling Green's (26-20, 60-56) season-long five-game winning streak, leaving the team four games out of first place in the SAL Southern Division.

For the second straight night the Crawdads and Cave Shrimp scored equal runs in the same frames. Beginning in the top of the second, Joe Cruz allowed an RBI groundout to Cristian Santana to give Hickory a 1-0 lead. But in the bottom of the frame, Isaias Velasquez singled before Jason Corder drove him home with a one out double to tie the game 1-1.

Two innings later the teams again put up solo runs. Eric Fry homered down the right field line in the top of the fourth to give the Crawdads a 2-1 lead. That lead, however was short lived as Velasquez and Corder both reached on base hits again in the bottom of the inning. Velasquez then scored on a sacrifice fly from Justin Reynolds to tie it at 2-2.

From there the Crawdads would pull away, getting two runs in the fifth and the ninth. In the fifth, facing Cruz, the Crawdads strung together three straight two-out hits, getting an RBI single from Jared Bolden followed by a run-scoring single from Matt West to make it 4-2.

In the ninth, Hickory got two more runs against Michael Jarman, pitching for the first time since July 16. Doug Hogan led-off with a long home run to left-center field to push the score to 5-2. After a one out single by Matt West, Cristian Santana produced a two-out double to left to drive home West for the 6-2 lead.

That lead was enough for Wilfredo Boscan (6-6) and the Hickory bullpen. Boscan finished six strong innings, allowing the two aforementioned runs on five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Cody Eppley, Yoon-Hee Nam, and Matt Nevarez followed with a combined three innings of hitless, scoreless relief to preserve the win.

The Hot Rods can still win the series by taking the finale on Sunday afternoon on First Responder's Day. LHP Frank De Los Santos (4-7, 3.62) draws the start against Hickory RHP Joe Weiland (3-4, 5.09) at 1:05 PM. Gates open at 11:30 AM for season ticket holders and 12 PM for the general public.
