Charleston Rebounds to Thwart Lakewood, 3-2

CHARLESTON, SC - Ray Kruml knocked an RBI triple and four Charleston arms combined to strike out 13 Lakewood batters as the RiverDogs mounted a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the BlueClaws in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 4,804 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

In the eighth, the RiverDogs rebounded to knot the score at 2-2 when Mitch Abeita was hit by a pitch and scored on Kruml's triple to center. Jose Pirela then bounced a single over the drawn-in infield for a RBI single and the go-ahead run.

With the victory, Charleston extends its home winning streak to a season-high six games and five straight games and improve their second half record to 21-26 (60-57 overall) while Lakewood slips to .500 in the second half with a 23-23 record (65-49 overall).

After being hitless for three-plus innings, Charleston captured a 1-0 advantage in the fourth when Abraham Almonte slapped a single to left for the RiverDogs' first hit of the game. After stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout, Almonte scored on Melky Mesa's RBI single.

The BlueClaws seized a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Travis Mattair lined a leadoff double and scored on D'Arby Myers' RBI infield single. On the play RiverDogs' second baseman Corban Joseph committed a throwing error that allowed Myers to advance to second. Harold Garcia smacked a RBI single to right that drove home Myers for the inning's second run.

RiverDogs reliever Chuck Nolte (3-2) earned the victory after he tossed a scoreless seventh inning while scattering one hit and striking out two. Edwin Walker added an inning of scoreless relief to set up Jeff Williams, who struck out two of the three ninth-inning batters he faced to earn his second save of the season.

Charleston's relievers followed suit after starter Cory Arbiso tossed six stanzas and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out a season-high seven batters. In all, the four RiverDogs pitchers struck out 13 batters and walked only two.

Lakewood reliever Ryan Bergh (3-5) suffered the defeat after he allowed two earned runs on two hits and two strike outs in two innings of relief.

Just a year removed from high school in Kelso, Wash., BlueClaws starter Trevor May received a no-decision after he was charged with one earned run on two hits and three walks while striking out six in five full frames. The 19-year old righty consistently hit 95 mph with his fastball throughout the game.

Charleston was limited to only six hits with no player securing more than one while Lakewood had eight knocks with Travis Mattair leading the way with three. Harold Garcia also added two for the BlueClaws.
