October 10, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Inter Miami CF News Release
Inter Miami CF announced today it has acquired veteran attacking midfielder Federico HiguaÃÂn in a trade with D.C. United. In exchange, Inter Miami will send $50,000 in 2021 General Allocation Money.
"Federico has been a great player in this league," said Paul McDonough, Inter Miami CF COO & Sporting Director. "We were thrilled to add more attacking depth, experience and playmaking ability to our roster when this opportunity presented itself."
HiguaÃÂn has registered 60 goals and 68 assists in 217 appearances in Major League Soccer since joining the league in 2012, adding a plethora of experience and attacking depth during the final stretch of the regular season for Inter Miami.
The Argentine became one of the MLS's best midfielders as he featured for the Columbus Crew SC for eight seasons after joining in July 2012. HiguaÃÂn was named the MLS Newcomer of the Year in 2012, led the Crew SC to the MLS Cup Final in 2015, and became only the 19th player in MLS history to register at least 50 goals and 50 assists in MLS. Overall, HiguaÃÂn registered 55 goals and 63 assists in 193 regular season appearances with Columbus, in addition to four goals and five assists in 14 playoff matches.
The 35-year-old attacking midfielder joined D.C. United ahead of the 2020 season as a player and Player Development Coach, where he made 10 appearances, scoring two goals.
Before arriving in MLS, HiguaÃÂn played several seasons in his native Argentina. The midfielder played for Club Atlético Colón for two seasons (2010-2012), Godoy Cruz for one season (2009-2010), Club Atlético Independiente for one season (2008-2009), Nueva Chicago for two seasons (2005-2007) and Club Atlético River Plate for four seasons (2003-2007). He came through the prestigious River Plate academy before signing his first professional contract with the club in 2003.
HiguaÃÂn also made stops in Mexico and Turkey, playing for Turkish giants Beà Ÿiktaà Ÿ JK for one season (2007-2008) and Mexican powerhouse Club América for half a season in 2008. With Beà Ÿiktaà Ÿ, he recorded two goals and two assists in 16 appearances. With Club América, he registered two goals and one assist in 22 appearances.
HiguaÃÂn joined his younger brother Gonzalo HiguaÃÂn on the Inter Miami roster, becoming only the 18th pair brothers to play together in MLS.
