Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa. - Gary Frederick, the college softball coach whose players made national headlines with their selfless display of sportsmanship, will be a special guest when the Lancaster Barnstormers play the York Revolution at Clipper Magazine Stadium Sunday evening.
Frederick is the coach at Central Washington University, which played a memorable game against Western Oregon last year. The game will not be remembered for the final score, but for how Frederick's players aided an injured opponent at a pivotal moment.
Western Oregon outfielder Sara Tucholsky hit a three-run home run, the first of her career, but failed to step on first base as she ran past. When she retreated to touch the bag, she suffered a torn ligament in her knee and was unable to run. Before Western Oregon coach Pam Knox could use a pinch runner for Tucholsky, which would have nullified the home run and caused it to be ruled a single, Central Washington first baseman Mallory Holtman and shortstop Liz Wallace offered to carry Tucholsky around the bases. The umpires ruled that the assistance was legal and all three runs scored.
This unique act of sportsmanship instantly became national news and the video became a YouTube hit. The three-run homer, which came in the second inning, ultimately helped Western Oregon to a 4-2 victory. The loss ended Central Washington's chances of winning the conference championship and advancing to the playoffs.
Frederick, who has been the coach at Central Washington for 15 years, will be throwing out a first pitch at Sunday's Barnstormers game. The video of the now-famous softball moment will be shown on the stadium scoreboard. Frederick is visiting Lancaster County to speak with students at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lampeter on Monday.
This special visit is part of the final War of the Roses series between the Barnstormers and Revolution at Clipper Magazine Stadium this season. Sunday's game is one of two that were moved back to a 6:05 p.m. start. The game against the Long Island Ducks on Sunday, Sept. 6 will also begin at that time. Tickets are available at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com, by calling 717-509-HITS or by visiting the stadium box office during regular business hours.
