Barnstormers Sneak Past Bluefish

August 26, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Tommy Herr never hesitated in sending Ryan Mulhern home.

The Lancaster first baseman came all the way around from second to score the winning run on an infield single by Cesar Suarez as the Barnstormers nipped the Bridgeport Bluefish, 2-1, in the finale of a three-game series in front of 3,476 Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Gerard Haran led off the ninth with a ground single to right off lefty Corey Lee (4-6). Mulhern forced him at second with a bunt back to the mound. Jed Morris grounded slowly up the first base line, moving Mulhern to second. Suarez hit a grounder up the middle. Second baseman Enohel Polanco made a diving stop, but the ball rolled a couple feet away, giving Mulhern just enough time to beat the throw home, giving the Barnstormers the win, their first in the series.

If the Barnstormers and their patrons had their way, however, Suarez would have never had the chance to play the hero.

Trailing, 1-0, entering the top of the ninth, the Bluefish were able to tie the game off Antonio Alfonseca. Wilson Batista led off with a walk and stole second. Polanco followed with a fly ball into the left field corner that was deep enough to advance Batista to third. Ryner Bautista, who had struck out three times earlier in the evening, grounded a single through the hole on the right side to score Batista with the tying run.

Adam Greenberg followed with a single to right. Bautista and Greenberg pulled off a double steal on a third strike to Colin Roberson, but Alfonseca (4-4) fanned Tim Johnson to get out of the inning with the score tied.

Both starters were brilliant. Lancaster's Jason Scobie allowed five hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings while walking two and striking out seven. Scobie's ERA for the second half of the season dropped to 1.98, and he has given the 'Stormers eight quality starts in 10 appearances. Esteban Yan allowed only three hits in seven innings for Bridgeport, surrendering a run on a triple by Suarez and sacrifice fly by Vic Gutierrez in the sixth.

Following an off day on Thursday, the Barnstormers will host the York Revolution in a three-game series beginning Friday night. Fans 21 and over will receive a pint glass courtesy of Miller Lite while supplies last. There will be fireworks following the game. Lancaster will send Trey Hodges (2-4) to the mound against Bob Zimmerman (3-3). Game time is 7:05.

NOTES: The Barnstormers managed only five hits in the game...They have had five or fewer in nine of the last 16 contests...Aaron Herr sat out the night after being hit in the head by a pitch in the Tuesday game...Nick Abel worked a scoreless eighth, his seventh straight scoreless appearance...The Barnstormers are 28-28 at home and 16-16 in one-run games on the year.
