Inferno sign Goaltender Gherson

COLUMBIA, SC (September 6, 2005) - The Columbia Inferno announce the signing of defenseman Derek Eastman and goaltender Robert Gherson for the 2005-06 season.

Eastman, entering his third season with the Inferno, played 64 games last year adding 4 goals and 19 assists along with 97 penalty minutes. During his rookie year with Columbia, Eastman played all 72 games contributing 48 points (13g, 35a). Prior to joining the Inferno, he played collegiate hockey with St. Cloud State for four years.

"We are excited to have Derek back for his third season in Columbia," said Head Coach Ted Dent. "Derek will help solidify our defense and bring good leadership skills to the Inferno."

Gherson, 6'1", 180 lbs. Toronto, Ontario native, played his rookie season with the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League last year. He posted a 24-12-7 record, 2.25 goals against average and a.925 save percentage. Gherson was named to the 2004-05 UHL All-Rookie team and was honored twice as the UHL Goaltender of the Week. During the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round (#145 overall).

"Robert comes to us after a very successful season in the United Hockey League. We hope that Robert along with Chris Houle will provide us with a very competitive goaltending tandem," said Dent.

The Columbia Inferno opens their fifth season in the ECHL Friday, October 21st against the Greenville Grrrowl at 7:05pm. Season and partial ticket packages are still available.
