Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - Victoria Salmon Kings Head Coach and General Manager Bryan Maxwell announced the signing of Mark Morrison as the Assistant Coach for the Salmon Kings today.

Victoria hockey fans will recognize the name because Morrison spent the better part of four seasons with the Western Hockey League, Cougars from 1979-83. The 42-year-old native of Delta, BC was the 3rd round (51st overall) pick of the New York Rangers in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

"It is going to be great to finally get to spend a winter in Victoria. I played junior with the Cougars and this is a tremendous hockey town. To get an opportunity to coach professional hockey in my home town is very exciting," said Mark Morrison, Assistant Coach of the Victoria Salmon Kings.

Morrison retired from professional hockey last season where he played and coached in the British National League for the Fife Flyers over the last 12 seasons. Morrison finished his final season in third place in points for the Flyers with 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points in 30 games.

During Morrison's 18 year hockey career he has made stops with the Canadian National Team, New York Rangers (NHL), Nova-Scotia Oilers (AHL), New Haven Nighthawks (AHL), Tulsa Oilers (CHL), Mereno (Italy), Milan Devils (Italy) and the Fife Flyers (BNL).

"It is great to add Mark to the Salmon Kings hockey staff. Along with Dan Belisle, Randy Maxwell, Greg Batters, Kim Oslund and Grant Ferguson we are ready to start this season with quality hockey people in place," said Maxwell.

"I have spent the last month talking with Bryan and I feel we will make a great coaching partnership. Bryan has many years of experience coaching and I look forward to learning from him and working alongside him on the bench this coming season," said Morrison.

"I am excited Bryan has selected such a talented individual to help teach and guide this team. I feel Bryan and Mark will combine to become a strong coaching tandem, and I look forward to what they bring to our club. Both coaches have tremendous experience and they seem to mesh well. This is another great day for our organization, now that our coaching staff is solidified", remarked Dan Belisle, Vice President of Hockey Operations.
