COLUMBIA, SC - The Florida Everblades (28-20-10) were defeated by the Columbia Inferno (33-16-6) 5-3 in front of 3,433 at the Carolina Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. Florida finished their three game road trip with a record of 2-1-0. The Everblades remained in sole possession of second place in the Southern Division despite the loss.
In the first period, the Inferno grabbed a 1-0 lead when defenseman Derek Eastman tipped a Matt Ulwelling pass past Florida netminder Jeff Maund at the 7:21 mark of the period.
In the second period, Florida tied the game at 1-1 when Paul Esdale skated in over the offensive blueline and snapped the puck into the top corner at the 4:15 mark of the period. The Blades then took a 2-1 lead late in the second period on the power play when forward Tom Buckley poked the puck through Inferno netminder Josh Blackburn at the 19:13 mark of the period.
In the third period, the Inferno tied the game at 2-2 with a goal off the stick of forward Terry Harrison. The Blades came right back just :16 seconds later and took a 3-2 lead when John McNabb fired a shot past Columbia goaltender Josh Blackburn. The Blades were assessed two minor penalties in a row and the Inferno made them pay and tied the game on a 4 on 3 power play when Tim Smith fired a shot through a screen past Florida goaltender Jeff Maund to tie the game at 3-3. Columbia then took a 4-3 lead seconds later when forward Alex Burrows tipped in a Sean Owens point shot. Columbia then added another goal on a 2 on 1 as forward Terry Harrison picked up his second for the afternoon to close out the scoring.
Florida goaltender Jeff Maund (14-12-7) stopped 25 of 30 shots he faced while Columbia netminder Josh Blackburn (21-8-4) stopped 27 of 30 shots he faced. The Everblades were 1 for 4 on the power play while the Inferno were 1 for 5.
Florida returns home to host the Columbus Cottonmouths in a pair of games on Friday, February 27th and Saturday, February 28th at 7:30 PM.
