Indians Roll over Rochester 8-1

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians plated three runs in both the first and second innings while every starter collected at least one base knock, highlighted by two-run home runs from second baseman Yamaico Navarro and designated hitter Jake Fox as the Tribe went on to roll over the Rochester Red Wings 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field.

Just one day after being shutout out by a fantastic pitching performance from Rochester starter Liam Hendriks, the Indianapolis offense would erupt for six early scores that never put the final outcome in doubt. Along with each starter collecting at least one hit, all but one scored at least one run and five drove in at least one run.

SS Chase d'Arnaud would get the scoring started right away in the first when he led off the frame with a base hit, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and trotted home a deep sacrifice fly by Fox. Navarro then stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run over the left-field wall to extend the Indians advantage to 3-0.

With the longball, his second since joining the Tribe on May 30, Navarro has now hit safely in 10 of the 11 games in which he has played for Indianapolis, during which he has posted a .310 average with eight runs scored and seven RBI.

Following their three-run opening frame, the Indians would continue their early-inning barrage with three more scores in the bottom half of the second. RF Brandon Boggs began the second-inning attack with a leadoff single and, after moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by C Tony Sanchez, came plateward when 3B Brian Friday lined a double to center field.

LF Gorkys Hernandez would eventually plate Friday with a clutch two-out single later in the second to extend the Indians advantage to 5-0, before coming home when CF Starling Marte followed with a two-bagger of his own.

Rochester would put across their only run of the contest in the top of the third when catcher J. R. Towles led off the frame with a double and, after a throwing error moved him to third, would cross home when SS Pedro Florimon grounded into a double play.

However, Fox would get that run back and more for the Indians when he launched a mammoth two-run to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the game its final score of 8-1. The shot by Fox, which plated Gorkys Hernandez who led off the frame with a base hit, was the right handed slugger's second of the season and first since April 27 in Durham.

Indianapolis' offensive outbreak was all in support of starting pitcher Rudy Owens (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) who battled through six innings to earn his fifth win of the season. The effort by Owens also lowered his ERA to an excellent 2.29, which is the best among all Indians starting pitchers and ranks among the top 10 in the International League.

After Owens, Indians relievers Chris Leroux (1.0 IP, 1 SO), Daniel Moskos (1.0 IP, 1 SO) and Jose Diaz (1.0 IP, 2 SO) combined for three hitless frames of relief to nail down the Indians victory. On the other side, Rochester starter Cole De Vries (2.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 1-5 on the season after surrendering all six early Tribe tallies.

After the victory, the Indians are now 36-27 on the season and hold a 6.5-game lead in the IL West Division with the second place Columbus Clippers still to play later tonight. The Tribe and Red Wings continue their four-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Indianapolis expects to send LHP Justin Wilson (4-4, 4.23) to the mound while Rochester is expected to counter with LHP Matt Maloney (0-1, 4.86).

The contest will be televised on HTSN (Hometown Sports and News), available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.

(On Sunday's win) "We played well today; especially after last night, we played well today. Rudy [Owens] had a great start. It was just nice to come out and get a win today."

(On DHing instead of playing a position) "Well, the biggest thing is you just try not to do too much. I think a lot of guys try to do too much and they run into problems. You try to go out there and see the ball, try to put a good swing on it and hope for the best result. Today I got some good pitches to hit and put some good swings on them, but unfortunately I only got one hit to show for it."

(On his home run) "They always say the trick to this game is hitting it where they can't catch it, so I figured they couldn't catch it out there. [Laughs] But no, you come out and you try to put good swings on it and I happened to get ahold of one there -- [Rochester reliever Delois Guerra] left one up and I put a good swing on it."

(On being 22-9 at Victory Field) "I think we have a really good team for this stadium. We have a lot of speed and I think it shows. You come out here and you see how much ground they cover in the outfield; not too many balls fall out there. We've got a good team that plays in this ballpark and I think that's one of the reasons why we're so successful here."
