Charlotte Knights News Release
(Columbus, OH) - Russ Canzler singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Charlotte reliever Donnie Veal (2-1, 1.33) and the Columbus Clippers slipped past the Charlotte Knights 5-4 on Sunday in game two of their four-game series from Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio.
After winning five straight games, the Knights have dropped the first two games of the series to Columbus.
For the second evening in-a-row, the Knights scored first. Hector Gimenez hit an RBI single in the first inning, which gave Charlotte an early 1-0 lead.
The Knights added to their lead in the third inning when they scored three runs to make it a 4-0 game. Gimenez had a two-run single in the third and finished the game 2-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.
In the bottom of the third inning however, the Clippers came right back and scored three runs off Charlotte starter Matt Zaleski, who allowed three runs over four innings. He did not factor in the decision.
Columbus then tied the game (4-4) off of Charlotte reliever Anthony Carter in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game stayed tied until the eighth-inning heroics of Canzler.
Reliever Cody Allen (2-2, 3.38) tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the win. Closer Chris Ray shut the door for the save - his second in as many days.
The Knights and Clippers will be back in action on Monday in game three of the four-game set. Charlotte will send LHP Charlie Leesman to the mound, while the Clippers will hand the ball to RHP Chris Schwinden. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
