Indians Break Out Sticks in 10-3 Win Over Buffalo
May 29, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Center fielder Rajai Davis extended his hitting streak to a club-best 16 games, while first baseman Brad Eldred clobbered his first Triple-A homer of 2007 as Indianapolis rolled to a 10-3 win over Buffalo Tuesday evening at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to 30-20 overall and 14-10 at home, while the Bisons fall to 28-20 on the season and 17-11 on the road. Wednesday will be the Tribe's 44th consecutive day atop the International League's West Division.
Davis has now hit safely in 16 straight contests (.391 BA, 27-for-69, 12 R, 10 RBI). His fourth three-hit effort of the campaign included a double in the first, an RBI single in the second and another single in the seventh. The 26-year-old's batting average has climbed from .285 to .323 during the hitting streak.
Eldred, who became just the third player in baseball history to hit 10 or more home runs at three different levels when he accomplished the feat in 2005, gave the Indians a 6-0 advantage with a three-run blast in the second. He finished the contest 1-for-3 with one walk, one hit by pitch, a pair of scores and three RBI.
Eldred earned a spot on Pittsburgh's 2007 Opening Day roster after hitting .303 with a club-best six long balls and 13 RBI in 27 Major League Spring Training games. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound slugger began the 2006 campaign with Indianapolis, but fractured his left thumb on April 23.
Eldred's roundtripper capped a five-run second for the Tribe. RF Nick Green led off with a single to left and 2B Luis Ordaz was hit by a pitch before both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Green scored moments later when Davis roped a single to center. Eldred's four-base hit then came after SS Brian Bixler reached on a fielder's choice and 3B Yurendell de Caster walked.
Indianapolis padded the cushion with four runs in the sixth. A pair of runners came around to score when the Buffalo second baseman mishandled a ball off the bat of LF Chris Aguila.
Indians RHP Marty McLeary (5.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO) earned the win, improving to 3-1. RHP
Franquelis Osoria (1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 SO) and LHP Michael Tejera (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) combined for 3.2 scoreless innings of relief after McLeary departed.
Bisons RHP Jeff Harris (5.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 2-3.
Buffalo was led by CF Ben Francisco, who finished 3-for-4 with his fourth homer of the year and three RBI.
Green collected a pair of hits for the Indians, while de Caster and Ordaz scored two times each.
The two teams return to Victory Field on Wednesday at 2 p.m., for game three of the four-game set. LHP Sean Burnett is expected to take the hill for Indianapolis, while Buffalo has yet to announce a starter.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
