State College Spikes News Release
(STATE COLLEGE, PA)- The State College Spikes, in association with the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, are pleased to announce that 2009 Indian Valley High School graduate Cassidy Grove has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship as part of a program created by the Foundation to aid three deserving students who reside within the boundaries of the 14-team NYPL. Cassidy was selected as the Pinckney Division winner, which represents applicants from the Spikes, Williamsport Crosscutters, Auburn Doubledays, Batavia Muckdogs, Jamestown Jammers and Mahoning Valley Scrappers. She will be honored by the Spikes and the New York-Penn League just prior to Sunday's 6:05 p.m. game between State College and Williamsport at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Cassidy, who resides in Reedsville, graduated third in her class of 224 students at Indian Valley High, carrying an academic GPA of 98.5%. She is currently enrolled as a freshman at Penn State, where she is studying Biochemistry.
The scholarship is based on financial need, academic performance and other criteria. Applicants must have carried a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and also be engaged in extracurricular activities. Applicants were required to be involved in community service projects and provide references from teachers and guidance counselors while also providing high school transcripts.
"The State College Spikes would like to congratulate Cassidy on receiving the $2,500 scholarship from the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and on a stellar academic career at Indian Valley High School," said Jason Dambach, Spikes General Manager. "Having the Spikes and Minor League Baseball in our region has not only provided numerous nights of fun, affordable, family entertainment at the ballpark, but it has helped make a personal impact on the lives of so many individuals and their families."
"When the Foundation was created in 2003, one of our ultimate goals was to make annual scholarships available," said C.J. Knudsen, Executive Director of the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and General Manager of the New York Penn-League's Vermont Lake Monsters. "In these hard economic times, we are grateful to reward these well-deserving individuals and fans of the New York-Penn League with scholarships. Hopefully we can continue to make more available in the future."
The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation's 2008 Community Benefit Report reports the New York-Penn League, its 14 Clubs, and the Foundation contributed in excess of $840,000 in assisting those in need within baseball and the communities hosting the League and its Clubs. The 2008 Report also recorded thousands of volunteer hours expended by players, coaches, mascots, and Club and League staff on charitable and community service needs.
