State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes put together a tenacious comeback effort once again, but the Williamsport Crosscutters were able to pull away and win, 7-4, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday afternoon.

State College (34-34) went down 4-0 to Williamsport (37-31) after four innings, but rebounded with a three-run fifth inning jump-started by Aaron Baker's RBI double. Baker would add his seventh triple of the year to take the New York-Penn League lead in that category, and end the game 3-for-5.

After Williamsport scored again in the sixth, the Spikes responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to get within 5-4. However, the Crosscutters scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to provide the final margin.

Elevys Gonzalez added two hits for State College, while Evan Chambers extended his on-base streak to nine games with a fifth-inning single.

Spikes starter Michael Felix (0-2) took the loss, going four innings and allowing four runs on four hits and two walks. Felix also struck out one batter.

Korey Noles (3-2) started and earned the win for Williamsport, allowing three runs over five innings on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. Justin Long (9) picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Sunday, the Spikes hit the field for the final time in the 2009 regular season at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as they take on the Crosscutters at 6:05 p.m. to complete the home slate. State College will send left-hander Tyler Cox (8-2) to the mound to face Williamsport left-hander Nick Hernandez (6-1). Cox would take the league lead in wins by himself with a victory on Sunday.
