A Night To Remember

Monday, June 30 seemed to be like any other day for Cardinals' pitching prospects Dan Haren and Jeremy Cummings, but it would soon become a day that they will not soon forget.

Haren, rated by Baseball America as the Cardinals' number one prospect, was scheduled to make his eighth start of the year for the Redbirds in Oklahoma City when the Cardinals told him he would be replacing starting pitcher Matt Morris that night against the San Francisco Giants. Later that day, the 22-year-old was slinging fastballs to Barry Bonds in his Major League debut at Busch Stadium. While the 6'5" righthander held the Giants to four runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings and didn't allow a home run to Bonds, he picked up the loss. On the bright side, he did notch his first Major League hit, a double off of San Francisco ace Jason Schmidt.

In Haren's place, the Redbirds sent Jeremy Cummings to the mound for his first start at the Triple-A level. Cummings, a West Virginia native, had been 8-6 with a 3.34 ERA in 15 starts with the Tennessee Smokies this season before being called up. The righty ended up going five innings, allowing six hits and three runs (all earned) in a no-decision versus the RedHawks. With Haren still with St. Louis, Cummings will look for his first win in a Redbirds uniform against the New Orleans Zephyrs Saturday, July 5.
