
Imwalle's Five Hits Lift Birds To 9-5 Win

St. Paul, MN - Matt Imwalle went 5-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Sioux Falls Canaries (11-4) to a 9-5 win over the St. Paul Saints (8-7) on Friday night at Midway Stadium.
The Canaries got on the board first in the top of the second inning. Will Smith led off with a double and advanced to third base on a fly out by Ben Van Iderstine. Smith came in to score on a double by Imwalle, and the Canaries took an early 1-0 lead.
St. Paul answered with four runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Marcel Longmire led off the inning with his third home run of the season to tie the game, 1-1. Later in the inning, Billy Cox and Scooter Jordan singled to put runners on the corners for Ben Thomas. Thomas singled to score Cox and give the Saints a 2-1 lead. St. Paul extended their lead when Adam Olow doubled to bring home Jordan and Thomas, and after two innings the Saints led 4-1.
The Birds tied the game in the top of the third inning. Angelo Fermin got aboard with a one-out single. Arroyo followed with a single to left-field that sent Fermin to third base. Saints' left-fielder Jay Davis missed the cutoff man on the throw in. The error allowed Fermin to score and make it 4-2. Wil Quintana followed with his league-leading fifth home run of the season. The two-run shot tied the game, 4-4.
The Canaries took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Birds loaded the bases on a single by Arroyo, a double by Will Smith, and an intentional walk to Van Iderstine. Imwalle singled to score Arroyo and give the Birds a 5-4 lead. Tim Marks followed with another single, scoring Smith and Van Iderstine for a 7-4 lead. Fermin capped the four-run inning off with an RBI single to score Imwalle and give the Canaries an 8-4 lead.
The Birds got an insurance run in the sixth. Fermin doubled and advanced to third base on a fly out by Quintana. Fermin scored the Canaries' final run on a passed ball to give the Canaries a five-run lead, 9-4.
St. Paul got one back in the bottom of the ninth when Matt Brunson reached on an error by Imwalle and scored on a single by Thomas. The run was not enough to overcome the Canaries lead, and the Birds held on to win 9-5.
Pat Mahomes (2-0) picked up his second win of the season allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out four in six innings of work. Jeff Urban (0-1) suffered the loss for St. Paul.
The Sioux Falls Canaries and St. Paul Saints will continue the three-game series on Saturday night at Midway Stadium. The Birds return home on Tuesday night for "Viva Las Vegas Night" presented by Allegiant Air.
