
Canaries Comeback Falls Short, 7-4

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-4) fell victim to an early deficit for the second night in a row, losing 7-4 to the Fort Worth Cats (6-7) in front of 3,137 at The Birdcage on Thursday night.
Terrence Green started the Cats off in the first inning with a double. Marc Mirizzi followed with a bunt single. Canaries' pitcher, Micah Posey, committed a throwing error attempting to get Mirizzi out, and opened the door for Green to score. Mirizzi was able to advance to third on a passed ball, and score on a groundout by Carlos Adolfo allowed, giving the Cats a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The Cats added to their lead in the second inning. Adam Miller walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error by Posey. Tim Wojcik singled to drive in Miller from second base and the Cats went up 3-0.
The third inning saw more scoring from the Cats. Chuck Carter started a string of hits with a triple to center field. Adolfo followed with a double, scoring Carter and giving the Cats a 4-0 lead. John Allen and Miller both singled; Miller's hit scored Adolfo helping putting the Cats up 5-0. Matt Spencer doubled to right field, allowing Miller to score giving the Cats a 6-0 lead after three innings.
The Canaries got on the board in the fifth inning. Wil Quintana hit a two bagger and was driven home by Ben Van Iderstine's single narrowing the Cats' lead to five runs, 6-1.
In the sixth inning, Canaries' catcher, Tim Marks reached on a fielding error by Cats' right fielder Adam Miller. Damon Lessler hit his first home run of the year, driving in two runs for the Birds, making the score 6-3.
Fort Worth scored one in the eighth inning. Wojcik singled to right center then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A two base throwing error by Canaries' third baseman, Matt Imwalle, allowed Wojcik to score giving the Cats a 7-3 lead.
The Birds retaliated in the bottom of the eighth with a run of their own. Angelo Fermin singled to right field and scored on Abner Arroyo's RBI double to left-center to cut the Cats lead to the 7-4 final. The Canaries were unable to score again in their fourth loss of the season.
Canaries' pitcher Micah Posey (1-2) suffered his second loss of the season. He pitched three innings giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits and three walks, while striking out two. Dan Valentin (2-0) got the win for the Cats. Valentin pitched 5.1 innings allowing tow earned runs, two walks and one strikeout. Aaron Marsden earned his first save of the year by pitching the final three innings.
The Canaries now head to St. Paul for a three game series with the Saints. The Birds will return home on Tuesday, May 29th against St. Joe. Tuesday is "Viva Las Vegas Night" presented by Allegiant Air.
