St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 25, 2007) - It was the showdown everyone in the South Division was waiting for, but for the St. Paul Saints the series didn't start the way they wanted it too as they lost to the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-5 on Friday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,575.
After squandering a seven run lead the night before the big question was how would the Saints respond? They came out clicking against former Major Leaguer Pat Mahomes roughing him up for four runs in the second inning. Marcel Longmire led off the inning with a solo shot off the scoreboard, his third of the season, which tied the game at one. With one out Billy Cox singled to right and with two outs Cox went to third on Scooter Jordan's single to right-center. Ben Thomas followed with an RBI single and Adam Olow added a two-run double that put the Saints up 4-1. That would be all the excitement the Saints would get against Mahomes who went 6.0 innings allowing four runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out three in picking up his second victory of the season.
Veteran lefty Jeff Urban gave the lead up in the third when, with one out, Angelo Fermin singled. Abner Arroyo singled to left sending Fermin to third and then he scored when Jay Davis' throw to second went awry. Wil Quintana followed with a two-run blast to left tying the game at four.
The Canaries put the game away in the fifth when Matt Imwalle singled in a run, with the bases loaded, to put them ahead 5-4. Imwalle finished the night 5-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Tim Marks' double plated two runs and Damon Lessler knocked in a ru with a single.
The Saints went from the fourth until the ninth inning before collecting another hit, which was a one out RBI single by Ben Thomas. The loss is the second in a row for the Saints.
The same two teams meet Saturday night at Midway Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Adam Brandenburg (0-0, 10.80) to the mound against Canaries RHP Trey Koeppel (1-0, 4.05). The game can be seen on KSTC-TV, Channel 45 and can be heard on KBGY 107.5 FM. It is What About Bob? Night presented by TDS Metrocom.
