Impact Eliminated from Canadian Championship
July 26, 2018 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The Montreal Impact lost 2-0 against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Wednesday evening at BC Place, losing the Canadian Championship semifinals series 2-1 on aggregate.
"We are in the middle of a series of games that's very demanding," said Impact head coach Rémi Garde. "Playing on a synthetic field today made moving the ball more difficult. We like to move the ball fluidly at the moment and we could not find it in this game. We tried to put the intensity we could and the team tried to do the maximum. Our regrets are mostly about the first leg, as we had opportunities to take a bigger advantage."
At the penalty spot, striker Yordy Reyna opened the score in the 19th minute when he beat with a first-time shot Clément Diop to his left, taking advantage of a cross by Jakob Nerwinski.
A few minutes earlier, the Bleu-blanc-noir came very close to get an all-important away goal, as Jeisson Vargas crossed a low ball for Saphir Taïder in the box. The Algerian's shot was saved by goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic.
Just before the half-hour mark, Cristian Techera almost doubled his team's lead in the game, but his free kick hit the crossbar.
In the 60th minute, Kei Kamara scored the series-winning goal, dispatching a penalty won by Marcel De Jong.
At the end of the game, Clément Diop made two very good saves in succession, both on Techera, in the 84th and in the 86th minute, allowing the Impact to stay in the tie.
"There is a lot of disappointment tonight," said goalkeeper Clément Diop. "We would have liked to qualify. We gave a good effort. I think we were there tonight, but we lacked a little bit of energy. We are very disappointed not to be able to play this final, but now, we will get ready for the next game against Atlanta."
Tonight's game was the Impact's sixth of a run of seven outings in 22 days across all competitions.
Upcoming games
The Impact will be back home on Saturday, July 28 at 7pm - originally programmed for 7:30pm - to face Atlanta United, who is topping the Eastern Conference standings, at Stade Saputo (TICKETS - TVA Sports, 98,5fm, TSN Radio 690). Then, on Saturday, August 4, D.C. United and England's record goal scorer Wayne Rooney will be the Bleu-blanc-noir's opponents on its turf (TICKETS - TVA Sports, 98,5fm, TSN Radio 690).
