LAFC Forward Carlos Vela Voted Captain for 2018 MLS All-Star Game Presented by Target
Published on July 26, 2018 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK - Major League Soccer today announced that Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) forward Carlos Vela has been named the MLS All-Star captain following a Twitter fan vote. Vela will wear the captain's armband as the best in MLS face Italian giants Juventus in the 2018 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target next Wednesday, Aug. 1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, UniMás, TSN, TVA Sports).
For the first time ever, fans decided the captain via Twitter hashtag, with each Tweet of a player's unique hashtag counting as one vote. This season, the four candidates, nominated by All-Star head coach Tata Martino, included Michael Parkhurst (Atlanta United), Diego Valeri (Portland Timbers), Carlos Vela (LAFC), and Bradley Wright-Phillips (New York Red Bulls).
Vela enters the match on the heels of a tremendous 2018 FIFA World Cup performance for Mexico, helping to spark a victory over 2014 World Cup champion Germany and scoring a goal in a win over South Korea. In his first season in MLS, Vela has helped expansion side LAFC to a historic first season, scoring seven goals and adding five assists to lead the club to a current second-place standing in the Western Conference. Led by Vela, LAFC has also advanced to the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The best in MLS will face the seven-time reigning Serie A champions Juventus, which also advanced to the UEFA Champions League final in two of the previous four years. The match will air on ESPN, UniMás, TSN and TVA Sports domestically as well as in more than 170 countries globally.
Tickets to the 2018 MLS All-Star Game against Juventus are now on sale by visiting Ticketmaster.com. Tickets start as low as $35.
