ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - Led by a four-point night from forward Sven Andrighetto, the Hamilton Bulldogs (20-21-0-4) scored three third period goals to get the game tied late, but they couldn't hold on and ultimately fell 6-4 to the Rockford IceHogs (22-21-4-2) on Tuesday evening at BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, Illinois.
Rockford forward Terry Broadhurst opened the scoring with seven minutes left in the first period, with assists from defencemen Adam Clendening and Viktor Svedberg.
IceHogs forward Joakim Nordstrom put his team ahead 2-0 two minutes into the second period when he stepped over the blueline and ripped a slap shot past Bulldogs goaltender Dustin Tokarski. Forward Jeremy Morin and defenceman Klas Dahlbeck drew assists on the play.
Hamilton forward Sven Andrighetto got Hamilton on the board on the power play at 10:36 of the second period with his team-leading 10th goal of the season. The only assist on the play came from forward Martin St. Pierre.
With 2:19 left in the middle frame, Rockford forward Brandon Mashinter made it a 3-1 game on the power play, with assists from forwards Brett Skinner and Mark McNeill.
Just 21 seconds into the third period, Hamilton defenceman Greg Pateryn fired home a slap shot on the power play for his eighth goal of the season to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Andrighetto and forward Nick Tarnasky collected assists.
A little more than minute later, IceHogs forward Alex Broadhurst regained his team's two-goal lead, 4-2, with assists from McNeill and Terry Broadhurst.
At 5:26 of the third period, Andrighetto fed forward Maxime Macenauer alone in front and Macenauer buried his fifth goal of the season to make it 4-3. Christian Thomas earned a second assist.
Thomas buried a rebound at the edge of the crease for his sixth goal of the season just two minutes later to tie the game 4-4. The power play goal was assisted by Macenauer and Andrighetto.
With less than five minutes to go, McNeill put his club ahead for good, making it 5-4, with assists from Dahlbeck and Alex Broadhurst.
Mashinter added an empty-net goal with 1:23 to play to make it a 6-4 game. Clendening and goaltender Jason Labarbera drew assists on the play.
Tokarski made 18 saves on 23 shots in the Bulldogs net in the loss. Labarbera made 21 saves on 25 shots for the IceHogs in the win.
The Bulldogs went 3-for-6 on the power play, while the IceHogs went 1-for-4.
