ST. JOHN'S, NL - The Providence Bruins edged the St. John's IceCaps 3-2 Tuesday night at Mile One Centre, putting an end to the IceCaps' six-game winning streak.
Malcolm Subban turned aside 27 shots to earn the victory for Providence, while Matt Lindblad, Craig Cunningham, and Anthony Camara had the tallies.
Adam Lowry and Ben Chiarot scored for St. John's. Michael Hutchinson - losing his first game after leading the IceCaps' to six straight victories - stopped 28-of-31 in a losing effort.
After a scoreless first period, the Bruins struck early in the second to open the scoring. Taking a behind-the-net feed from Nick Johnson, Lindblad one-timed it through the legs of Hutchinson at 27 seconds to make it 1-0.
Lowry evened the score at a goal apiece just over four minutes later, however, with the IceCaps on the man advantage. After Will O'Neill sent a cross-ice feed along the point to Jerome Samson, Samson launched a shot that tipped in off Lowry and over the glove of Subban.
Providence jumped out to a 2-1 advantage midway through the final frame, when Cunningham - breaking into the IceCaps' zone all alone, shorthanded - charged in on goal before deking to his backhand and shoveling the disc past a down-and-out Hutchinson.
Then, at 15:07, Camara extended the Bruins' lead to two, the eventual game-winner. After Alexander Khokhlache weaved his way around the IceCaps' net, Camara took a feed and fired his eighth of the season into the open cage.
Not going down without a fight, St. John's drew within one on a goal from Chiarot at 16:43. Waltzing into the Bruns' zone with a head of steam, Chiarot wristed a shot from the top of the circle that fooled Subban to make it 3-2.
The IceCaps and Bruins close out their two-game series Wednesday night at Mile One Centre, as St. John's looks to earn the split with a victory.
