Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
LAFAYETTE, La. â The Louisiana IceGators scored three power play goals to sweep a home-and-home series and lift past the Mississippi Sea Wolves 5-2 at the Cajundome.
"Our penalty killing let us down," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "They were red-hot on the power play and that was the difference. I thought we outplayed them 5-on-5 but we don't have anything to show for it. We have our work cut out for us heading into Gwinnett, which is a tough place to play. It's not going to be an easy way to finish three games in three days."
The loss snapped the Sea Wolves eight-game unbeaten streak in regulation on the road, going 7-0-1 since December 11. The last regulation road defeat for Mississippi was at Victoria on December 10.
Louisiana (16-17-3, 35 points) got rolling on the power-play at 7:11. Roger Leonard won a faceoff back to Randy Dagenais, who ripped a left point shot through traffic past Jason Wolfe and bulged the twine for his eighth goal of the campaign.
Mississippi (16-14-3, 35 points) knotted the score at even-strength. Darryl Campbell got a shot away from the slot only to be stopped by Nathan Marsters, but Chris Cava followed on the rebound to tally his fourth of the season at the 17:09 mark. Pat O'Leary also garnered a helper
Just 25 seconds later, the Sea Wolves took the lead. O'Leary was denied on a left circle shot, but he gathered back his own rebound and fed Kerry Ellis-Toddington, who found the back of the net for the second straight game and sixth time this season. Cava also had an assist on the goal, giving Mississippi a 2-1 lead.
In the second, the IceGators continued their power-play prowess at 2:56. Chris Thompson deposited his eighth of the year in close which was set up by Wes Mason and Maxime Fortunus.
Louisiana netted its third power play marker of the game at 14:30. Mark Rooneem got behind the Mississippi defense and snapped home his sixth goal of the campaign. Jade Galbraith and Dagenais picked up assists.
Rooneem went back to work and gave the âGators some cushion taking a pass from Galbraith and beating Wolfe on a breakaway for his second of the game and seventh of the year.
In the final minute, Mississippi pulled its goaltender for the extra attacker, only to have it backfire. Mason deposited an empty-netter to round out the scoring from Dan Sullivan.
Mississippi was unsuccessful on two chances with the man advantage, while Louisiana was a perfect 3-for-3 on the power play. Sea Wolves outshot the IceGators 35-30.
Additional notes: Earlier in the day, Louisiana placed former Sea Wolves forward John Evangelista on waivers ... Mississippi captain Louis Dumont was held off the scoresheet to halt his point streak at eight games.
