Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs used four first period goals to help pick up a 5-2 victory over the hometown Frontenacs in Kingston Sunday afternoon.
The IceDogs got off to a quick start striking three times in a span of less than two minutes to take a 3-0 lead five minutes into the first. Trevor Petersen got things started with his third goal of the season just over three minutes in, before David Pacan would strike for his 27th of the season less than a minute later to make it 2-0. Ryan Strome would then complete the run, scoring 49 seconds later to make it 3-0. The IceDogs would not stop there however as Andrew Agozzino would strike on the powerplay before the midway point of the period to make it 4-0 for the visitors. The goal was Agozzino's 40th of the season, marking the second straight season he has reached the milestone. The score would remain that way for the rest of the period, sending Niagara into the intermission with a big 4-0 lead. Shots in the period were 21-7 in favour of Niagara.
The second period would see Kingston starter Igor Bobkov settle in, as he held the IceDogs scoreless in the period after giving up four in the first. Kingston would then get on the board with just over three minutes left in the second to make it 4-1 after 40 minutes.
The third period would see the Frontenacs make things a little more interesting, as they struck for a powerplay goal of their own to make it 4-2 with just under 18 minutes remaining. Kingston would look to close the gap further, but Christoper Festarini would keep the IceDogs lead at two until Alex Friesen would strike just over halfway through the third to give Niagara a little more breathing room at 5-2. That would prove to be the last of the scoring as the IceDogs picked up their second straight road victory by a final score of 5-2.
Final shots in the game were 52-22 as Festarini stopped 20 shots to pick up his third straight victory.
With the victory and an Ottawa loss to Mississauga, the IceDogs are now five points up on the 67's for first place in the Eastern Conference with only three games left to play.
The IceDogs will next hit the ice back at the Gatorade Garden City Complex on Thursday night when they play host to the visiting Peterborough Petes.
