St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - The Manchester Monarchs completed the two-game sweep of the St. John's IceCaps with a 4-1 victory at Mile One Centre Saturday night.
Martin Jones was near-perfect, making 37 saves on 38 shots in picking up his second straight win. Linden Vey had a goal and an assist while Tyler Toffoli chipped in with a pair of helpers. Hunter Bishop's third period shorthanded marker stood as the game-winner.
For St. John's, Aaron Gagnon scored the team's only goal while Eddie Pasquale faced 21 shots, making 18 saves.
The teams played nearly 40 minutes of scoreless hockey before the Monarchs were first to hit the scoresheet with just 3.1 seconds remaining in the second period. Toffoli found an open Bryan Rodney at the right point, and the Manchester defenceman wound up and blasted a shot that beat Pasquale high on the blocker side to give the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the third period.
St. John's rebounded to tie things up early in the final frame on Gagnon's third of the season. Spencer Machacek controlled the puck and sent a beautiful pass cross ice to Gagnon at the side of the net, and the B.C. native tipped it in to tie the score at one at the 2:06 mark.
Manchester surged ahead midway through the third with their second shorthanded goal of the two-game series. Stefan Legein fed a streaking Bishop, who got in behind the IceCaps defence and beat Pasquale to put Manchester on top 2-1.
Then, just minutes later, the Monarchs added to their lead on a goal by Vey. Toffoli fired a shot at the net that bounced off Pasquale and hit Vey before caroming into the net to give Manchester a two-goal advantage.
The Monarchs iced the game on an empty-netter by Bodnarchuk with seven seconds left on the clock.
St. John's falls to 23-31-1-3 overall and has lost six straight games on home ice.
The IceCaps resume their six-game home stand next weekend against the Eastern Conference leading Syracuse Crunch.
