Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins finished a three-game home stand with a 2-1 shootout win over the Albany Devils at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
It was Wilkes-Barre/Scranton taking the 1-0 lead at 9:25 of the first with the help of the man-advantage. Holding the puck down below the goal line, Tom Kostopoulos sent a pass to the slot that Trevor Smith snapped past Maxime Clermont for his 17th goal of the season.
Multiple saves by Clermont through the remainder of the first and into the second period to keep the Devils within one and allow his team to even the match with 4:14 to go until the intermission. Jacob Josefson led a 3-on-2 rush into the Penguins zone and swung the puck to Darcy Zajac, who skated in from the far circle and lifted a shot over the glove of Jeff Zatkoff.
Those would be the only two goals during regulation and overtime as the game headed into the shootout. With the score tied, 1-1, through four rounds, Kostopoulos sent the go-ahead goal in between Clermont's pads, but Joe Whitney answered with a laser to the top right corner to send the shootout into sudden death.
In top of the sixth round, rookie Adam Payerl fired a wrist shot inside the far post and Zatkoff denied Steve Zalewski on the other side of the ice to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the win.
It was the sixth game in a row decided by a single goal for the Penguins as they have four of those contests, all by a score of 2-1.
Zatkoff stopped 26-of-27 shots through overtime and 4-of-6 in the shootout. Clermont, making his AHL season debut, made 29 saves for the Devils, while turning aside three of the six Penguins shooters.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins begin a stretch of seven consecutive games on the road on Friday, Mar. 8, as they take on the Providence Bruins at 7:05PM. Tune into 102.3 The Mountain.
