Ice, Tapia go deep in 6-3 loss to Kernels

(Cedar Rapids, IA) - Logan Ice keyed the offense early and Emmanuel Tapia drilled a homer later in the ballgame, but the Lake County Captains (9-16) could not find enough runs to overtake the Cedar Rapids Kernels (15-10) on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field. A pair of timely two-run, two-out doubles helped Cedar Rapids notch its second win in a row over Lake County, 6-3.

Ice ignited the Captains' offense in the very first inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Ice hammered a deep drive over the left field wall for a solo shot. Ice's second homer of the season gave the Captains an early 1-0 lead.

The Kernels clawed back and tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. Jermaine Palacios singled and raced from first to third on a single by Lewin Diaz. Jaylin Davis then hit a chopper to shortstop and the ball was hit too slowly for the Captains to turn two. Palacios scored from third to knot the score at 1-1.

Ice again lifted the Captains in the third. Alexis Pantoja singled to lead off the inning and moved to second later in the inning on a ground out. With two outs, Ice roped a single to score Pantoja and put the Captains back ahead, 2-1. In the bottom of the third, however, Cedar Rapids stormed right back.

Christian Cavaness ripped a double down to lead off the third and Mitchell Kranson promptly singled him home with a one-out knock to tie the score once again. Two batters later, Captains starter Micah Miniard walked Davis and that brought Ben Rortvedt to the plate. Rortvedt hit a sharp grounder down the right field line that just barely evaded Tapia's diving glove and bounced down the right field line. Both Kranson and Davis scored to put the Kernels ahead for the first time, 4-2.

The Kernels added two more runs in the sixth with another two-run, two-out double. Miniard retired the first two men in the inning, but Aaron Whitefield rolled an infield single down the third base line to keep the inning alive and Miniard walked Lopez. A wild pitch sent both runners into scoring position and Shane Carrier drilled a double down the left field line that scored both baserunners to push the Cedar Rapids advantage to 6-2.

Tapia gave the Captains life in the seventh. The powerful lefty slugger hammered a leadoff homer to dead center off of the batter's eye, but the Captains could not muster any more runs. Tapia again came to the plate in the eighth with two men on and two outs, representing the tying run. However, lefty reliever Alex Robinson struck him out to end the inning.

Kernels starter Tyler Beardsley earned the win. He pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Beardsley (3-1) struck out seven Captains and walked one. Max Cordy pitched a one-two-three ninth to earn his second save.

Miniard (1-1) took the loss for Lake County. The right-hander pitched six innings and gave up a season-high six runs on seven hits. Miniard walked two and did not strike out a batter.

The Captains have lost the first two games in Cedar Rapids and will try to rebound on Thursday night. First pitch for the series finale at Perfect Game Field is scheduled for 7:35 PM EST.
