South Bend Cubs News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Cubs and Kane County Cougars traded runs throughout the first four innings of Wednesday's game before the Cubs scored in the fourth, fifth, and eighth innings to insure a 6-2 win and take the first two games of the three game series.
A pair of early defensive errors and a timely single allowed the Kane County Cougars to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
In the second inning, Chris Pieters stole second base and then scored the tying run for the Cubs after the throw from Cougars catcher, Alexis Olmeda, got passed the glove of Kane County centerfielder, Anfernee Grier. After the error, South Bend then took a 2-1 lead on Jhonny Pereda 's RBI-double.
Both teams continued to trade runs throughout the fourth inning as Cougars' Luis Silverio created a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the top of the frame. But the Cubs answered with two more runs to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Kevonte Mitchell 's RBI-double.
South Bend added an insurance run in the fifth via Yeiler Peguero 's single to score Zack Short . Mitchell also added another insurance run in the eighth to give the Cubs a 6-2 lead, which proved to be too much for Kane County to overcome.
Kevonte Mitchell had one of his best games of the season. In four at-bats, Mitchell reached base safely four times, registered three hits, scored three runs scored, stole two bases, and collected one RBI.
Starting pitcher, Tyson Miller, also had his best game of the season for the Cubs; he threw a career high 6.0 innings and only allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out four hitters in the process.
Tomorrow's matchup will be the Cubs' third and final game against Kane County as Star Wars night returns to Four Winds Field. Bryan Hudson is scheduled to take the mound for South Bend against the 2014 Arizona Diamondbacks second-round pick, Cody Reed. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
