Bees Walked Off by Loons
Merrigan drives in two runs in the loss
(Midland, MI) The Burlington Bees (9-13) dropped game two of a three-game series in Midland to the Great Lakes Loons (10-16), 5-3, at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night.
Great Lakes grabbed the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Brendan Davis shot a double to the wall in right. After a single by Carlos Rincon put runners at the corners, Mitchell Hansen drew a walk to load the bases. Oneil Cruz opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, giving the Loons a 1-0 lead.
The Bees responded quickly, tying the game in the second. After Loons' starter Jordan Sheffield struck out his fourth straight batter, Sam McDonnell worked a walk. Brennan Morgan picked up the Bees' first hit of the game, lining a single into center. With two outs and the bases loaded, Josh Merrigan worked a walk, scoring McDonnell, tying the game at one.
The Loons regained the lead in the third. With a runner at second base and two outs, Cruz once again came through, lining a single into left, scoring Hansen, putting the Loons back on top, 2-1.
The Bees scored three of their five runs with two outs in game one of the series and continued that trend in game two. With two outs in the fifth, Jack Kruger doubled to right and then scored on a Jordan Zimmerman single, knotting the game at two.
Morgan reached on an error to start the top of the sixth inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Josh Merrigan ripped a triple to left-center, scoring Morgan, putting the Bees in front, 3-2.
The Loons started their comeback in the seventh. Saige Jenco started the inning by reaching on an error. Gavin Lux then put runners at the corners with his second single of the game. After a groundout, the Bees intentionally walked Rincon to load the bases. After a strike out, Jenco came into to score on a balk, tying the game at three.
With the game still tied in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lux reached for the third time, this time on a walk. After moving to second on a passed ball, Lux came home to score when Carlos Rincon launched a two-run home run to left, giving the Loons a 5-3 win over the Bees.
Loons' reliever Sven Schuller (2-0) earned the win while Blake Smith (0-1) was charged with the loss. The Bees and the Loons will finish the series on Thursday morning at 9:35 am CST. Travis Herrin makes his first start of the season while Leo Crawford makes the start for the Loons.
