Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

Pensacola, Fla. - Mike MacIntyre picked an opportune time to score his first goal as a Pensacola Ice Flyer when he was the only player out of 18 shooters to score in the Ice Flyers' shootout victory over the Mississippi RiverKings, 3-2, in Southaven, MS.

After no scoring after 20 minutes of play, Ice Flyers' captain Leo Thomas got his team on the board with a goal 9:36 into the second period. The RiverKings found themselves killing a 5-on-3 shortly after that. They managed to kill off one penalty and while down 5-on-4, Ian Finnerty tied the game for the RiverKings with a shorthanded goal off a breakaway.

The Ice Flyers, however, wasted no time to go up by a goal once again. Ryan Salvis scored just 52 seconds after Finnerty's goal. Then 8:57 into the third frame, Steven Kaunisto tied the game back up at 2.

Neither team could manage to score again in regulation time, sending the game into overtime. The Ice Flyers controlled the play during the entire overtime, but was unable to score. After another five minutes of no scoring, the game went into a shootout to decide which team got the extra point.

Matthew Krahn for the RiverKings and Steve Christie for the Ice Flyers stopped shooter after shooter. Eight rounds came and went without either team beating these goalies. Defenseman Mike MacIntyre received the nod from head coach Gary Graham for the Ice Flyers and he was able to get the puck past Krahn. Christie then stood tall for the ninth time in the shootout when he turned aside RiverKings' Kaunisto.

This makes nine straight road victories for the Ice Flyers with the 3-2 shootout win. The RiverKings outshot the Ice Flyers 35-29, and both teams failed to capitalize on their power play opportunities, the Ice Flyers with two and the RiverKings with three.

These two teams square off on Tuesday night in Pensacola on Tom Thumb Ice at the Pensacola Bay Center. Game time is 6:05 p.m. instead of the normal start time of 7:05 p.m. $1 hot dogs and $2 drafts will be served until just after game time, so come early and enjoy some cheap hot dogs and beer.
