Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears fell to the Augusta RiverHawks 4-3 in front of a crowd of 3,551.
The Augusta RiverHawks struck first at 7:32 of the first period when defenseman Ian Watters fed a cross ice pass to a streaking Shawn Skelly who wristed a shot over Knoxville goaltender Connor Toomey. The Ice Bears managed 19 shots in the first period but were held off the scoreboard and headed into the locker room down 1-0.
In the second period, the Ice Bears were able to draw even when the SPHL's top power play struck. Knoxville's Berkley Scott ripped a wicked wrist shot off the post and in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. Despite the tied score after 40 minutes of play, the Ice Bears were drastically outshooting their opponent 33 - 16.
The third period was filled with action as the two teams combined for five goals. Augusta looked to be on their way to a resounding victory when they rattled off three unanswered goals. Goals by William Lacasse, Chad Ziegler and Pat Shafer put the RiverHawks up 4-1.
The Ice Bears were not going to lay down for the RiverHawks as they notched another power play goal at 16:12, when rookie forward Peter Neal buried a loose puck past the flailing Augusta netminder to cut the lead to 4 - 2. With under two and half minutes remaining in the game, Ice Bears' rookie defenseman Nate Peterson scored his first professional goal as he wired a quick wrist shot from the Augusta blueline and into the net - putting the Ice Bears within one and 2:24 remaining in the game.
The Ice Bears applied a tremendous amount of pressure but were unable to score their fourth goal to force overtime. The RiverHawks defeated the Ice Bears 4-3.
