
'Kings Rally Late, Fall in Shootout

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (9-7-3) bounced back from a 2-1 deficit halfway through the third period to send the game into overtime, but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Pensacola Ice Flyers (11-6-2) in the ninth round of the shootout.
The first twenty minutes of play went by scoreless, but Pensacola broke the tie at the 9:36 mark of the second period as Leo Thomas deeked his way around Matthew Krahn to put the Ice Flyers up by one. The one-goal lead for the Ice Flyers didn't last long, as Ian Finnerty, shorthanded, unassisted, beat Steve Christie to tie the game at one. But, the Ice Flyers would take the lead once again with a goal 52 seconds later to be up by one heading into the second intermission.
But the RiverKings came back midway through the third period. Steven Kaunisto's shot from the point beat Christie five-hole to tie the game at two to send the game into overtime.
Neither team could convert in the overtime period forcing a shootout. The lone goal in the shootout came in the ninth round as Mike MacIntyre beat Krahn. The RiverKings failed on the next shootout attemept, falling 3-2 to the Ice Flyers.
Matthew Krahn (6-4-2) picked up a loss after stopping 25 of 28 shots against. Steve Christie (7-3-2) picked up the win stopping 33 of 35 shots on goal.
Following the game, the RiverKings auctioned off their special Noah's Gift 5K jerseys. The auction raised $6,250 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Noah's Gift endowed fund at the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.
