Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Pensacola, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers faced their I-10 rival, the Mississippi Surge, Saturday night in Pensacola. The game would take a shootout to decide a winner, and that winner was the Surge by a score of 3-2.
The first period saw a lot of action and both ends of the ice. Pensacola narrowly outshot the Mississippi 10-9, but neither team had anything to show for as the first ended a 0-0 tie.
The scoring opened 6:38 into the second when Branden Kosolofsky of the Surge scored shorthanded. Then not even two minutes later, the Surge made it 2-0 as Joe Harcharik beat Ice Flyers' goalie Gerry Festa.
With 6:19 left in the second, Ice Flyers' defenseman Steve Bergin pinched into the zone, took a pass from Ryan Salvis and beat the Surge netminder, Kiefer Smiley.
The Ice Flyers kept fighting back and tied the game 7:22 into the final frame when Jordan Chong scored.
After 60 minutes of hockey, the game went into overtime. But five minutes of overtime solved nothing and the two teams went to a shootout to see who would get the other point.
Four shooters for Pensacola were not able to beat Smiley. After Harcharik scored for the Surge as their second shooter, Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn scored on Festa and sealed the victory for the Mississippi Surge, 3-2.
Pensacola outshot Mississippi 35-33. Both teams failed to score on the power play: Pensacola went 0 - 5 and 0 - 3 for Mississippi.
