Mississippi Surge News Release

A 3-2 shootout win at Pensacola Saturday night completed a weekend of turnabout being fair play for the Mississipppi Surge. The victory on Saturday was the first in six games for the Surge over Pensacola this season. It came just one night after the Surge lost its first game of the season to the Mississippi RiverKings, after winning the first six games of that season series.

Kiefer Smiley stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout and the Surge got shootout goals from Joe Harharik and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn to win the game. Versteeg-Lytwyn who played for the Surge last season, was appearing in his first game of the season for the team. His goal in the fourth round of the shootout gave the Surge an insurmountable lead in the shootout and the victory.

After a scoreless first period, Branden Kosolofsky put the Surge on top with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 6:38 of the second period. Harcharik made it 2-0 a minute and a half later. With 6:19 left in the period, Steve Bergin got Pensacola on the scoreboard.

Jordan Chong scored the only goal of the third period, tying the game for Pensacola as Ryan Salvis picked up his second assist of the night. As neither team could score in the final 12:38, the game moved to overtime, in which the Surge outshot Pensacola 6-3 but couldn't get the game winner behind Pensacola goalie Gerry Festa, forcing the shootout.

Harcharik scored in the second round of the shootout, and Versteeg-Lytwyn sealed the win with his goal. The Surge will host the Louisiana IceGators on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
