Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, Fl - The Pensacola Ice Flyers (15-8-1) utilized the SPHL's new shootout procedure to win 4-3 over the Mississippi RiverKings (14-7-4). The win moved the Ice Flyers into sole possession of third place in the SPHL.
Stephen Buco got the scoring going with some ridiculous stick handling that caused Mississippi goalie Garrett Sheehan to commit to his right and Buco slid the puck past Sheehan's left leg just 3:24 into the first period. Michael Juola and Brandon Blair picked up the assists on the goal. The RiverKings' Mike Grace tied the game up about five and half minutes later before Corey Banfield broke the tie when he scored with exactly seven minutes remaining in the first. Adam Pawlick had the lone assist on the goal. Less than two minutes later, Pawlick got a goal of his own with Cody Dion having the only assist.
Mississippi mounted a comeback in the second period and was able to tie the game up thanks to a goal with 923 left in the period by Dean Willmott and another with 7:11 left by Ryan Marcuz.
After scoreless third and overtime periods, the game headed to a shootout tied at three. With the shootout tied at two shooters through five rounds, the teams headed to the SPHL's new format where shooters can shoot as many times as they want. Banfield and Junior Harris scored in the first five rounds and Banfield shot again in the sixth and seventh rounds, scoring in the seventh to secure the win.
The Ice Flyers are back in action tomorrow night as they take on the Louisiana IceGators inside the Cajundome in Lafayette, La. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Central. Watch Parties for the game will be held at New York Nick's downtown and the 9 Mile Rd. Beef 'O' Brady's location.
