Fayetteville, NC - The Peoria Rivermen got a pair of powerplay goals and 23 stops from rookie netminder David Jacobson to pick up a 3-2 victory over the Fayetteville FireAntz Friday night. The win, Peoria's sixth in a row, improves the Rivermen to 16-5-2, good for first place in the SPHL at 34 points, with a rematch looming Saturday night against the FireAntz.
Fayetteville started the scoring at 5:27 of the first period when Joseph Manno wrapped around to the left corner and beat Peoria goaltender David Jacobson to make it 1-0. Peoria tied it up at 9:45 of the first when Steve Morra connected on a powerplay rush from the left circle for the 1-1 score.
The Rivermen took the lead for good early in the second period when Adam Stuart roasted a high slot feed past FireAntz goaltender Sean Bonar for the 2-1 lead at 2:46 of the second. The Rivermen extended their lead at 14:39 of the second when Walker Wintoneak cleaned up a rebound on the powerplay to make it 3-1. The FireAntz cut the lead to 3-2 at 16:40 of the second on a redirection by Kyle Gibbons of a powerplay drive from the high slot, but Peoria held Fayetteville off the board for the last 23:20 of regulation for a 3-2 final score.
Jacobson won his third straight game in net for the Rivermen by stopping 23 of 25 shots faced. The win improves Jacobson to 3-4-0 in his professional career after the rookie began the season 0-4-0 with Macon.
Notes: Brandon Greenside earned two assists to give him points in his last six games...Stuart notched a goal and an assist for his second straight multi-point game, he has five points in his last two contests...Peoria out-shot the FireAntz 21-16 for the first two periods before being out-shot 9-4 in the third...The Rivermen continue the road trip when they rematch Fayetteville Saturday night with a 6:05 CST puck drop...The broadcast can be heard starting with the pregame show at 5:45 Central Time at portal.stretchinternet.com/rivermen
