Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Pensacola Ice Flyers and the Louisiana Ice Gators both failed to score in overtime, but Louisiana won the game 5-4 (3-2 SO) after Shawn Skelly's deciding goal in the shootout at the Cajun Dome on Friday night.
The IceGators came out very strong in the opening period as they took a 2-0 lead with both goals by Luke Kasteel at the 3:36 and 12:52 mark. Ice Flyers took advantage of a power play with a goal from Cody Ferriero with assists to Corey Banfield and Brett Lutes at 14:55 of the first to put Pensacola within one goal.
It was early in the second period that Lutes capitalized on yet another power play to even the score at 2-2. However, Louisiana regained their two-goal lead with goals from Adam Stuart and Shaw Skelly to bring the score to 4-2 going into the final period.
It was Ferriero from Jeremy Gates at the 5:32 mark of the third period to bring the Ice Flyers within a goal of the IceGators. With less than two minutes of regulation time, Michael Budd found the back of the net with assists to Steven Bergin and Mitchell Good to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Neither team could score in OT so it came down to a shootout. It was a back and forth match as it took nine turns to complete the shootout, but it was Shawn Skelly's goal that gave the IceGators the 5-4 victory.
The Ice Flyers are back at home tomorrow and Sunday as they take on the Mississippi RiverKings. Tomorrow night's game is "Last Minute Shopping Night" and Sunday's game is "Scout Day/Mascot Night".
