December 5, 2014 - SPHL (SPHL)
Columbus Cottonmouths News Release
Andrew Loewen was superb between the pipes for the Columbus Cottonmouths, as he did not allow a goal in a 2-0 victory over the Huntsville Havoc.
Columbus was led by Patrick McCadden, who grabbed one goal. McCadden scored 8:47 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Columbus. Craig Simchuk assisted on the tally.
The Cottonmouths stifled Huntsville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Columbus was steadier on the defensive front than it has been for much of this season. The Cottonmouths average 2.8 goals allowed per game.
Bryce Williamson also scored for Columbus. More assists for Columbus came via Matt Gingera and Chris Bailer, who each chipped in one.
The Havoc put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Columbus to score on any of its five power plays. Huntsville could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Havoc put an average of 2.7 pucks into the net per game. Huntsville's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Havoc finished with 19 penalty minutes. Huntsville relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Mike Gurtler, Jacob Johnstone and Ray Ortiz took 16 of the team's 28 shots.
The Cottonmouths' Loewen stopped 28 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Columbus ended with 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors. Kevin Genoe recorded 27 saves for the Havoc. Huntsville registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
