Ice Flyers Extinguish FireAntz 5-2
March 10, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Fayetteville FireAntz entered into tonight's game clinging to their playoff hopes. They'd need a win over the Ice Flyers and some help from the Mississippi RiverKings. They got neither as the lost to Pensacola 5-2 and the RiverKings beat Columbus 6-3. With the loss, the FireAntz are now eliminated from contention for a spot in the 2012 SPHL President's Cup playoffs.
Travis Watt would score 5:49 into the first period for what would end up being the only lead of the game for the FireAntz. Less than a minute later, Ryan Salvis would tie up the game by deking hard and slipping the puck past former Flyers goalie Erik Hudson. Assisting on the goal were Dan Buccella and Donnie Harris. Just past the halfway mark of the first a Tyler Soehner slap shot found the back of the net; Matt Robertson and Dan Buccella picked up the helpers. The Ice Flyers would go up 3-1 when, in his first professional game, new comer Jeff Sapieha took a feed from Jordan Chong and Chris Wilson and put the puck in the goal. His first professional goal would prove to be the game winning goal. Another former Ice Flyer would cut the lead down to 3-2 when Chris Rebernik put the puck behind Jesse Kallechy.
Adam Kuhn would pick up his first goal of the night 5:45 into the second when he buried the puck while Ryan Hohl and Paul Holder picked up the assists. Almost 10 minutes later Kuhn would again find the back of the net and Andrew Howes and Steve Bergin got the helpers this time.
Neither team would score in the third period as both Hudson and Kallechy made several great saves. Nine minutes in, Rob Sich started hugging on Tyler Soehner and dragged him to the ice. Both landed a few punches while on the ice and would receive two minutes for roughing but Sich got in a last minute slap after the linesman had separated the two and that earned him an additional roughing minor.
Kallechy stopped 27 of the 29 fired his way. The Ice Flyers finished perfect on the PK for the night killing both of Fayetteville's power plays while going 1-for-3 on the power play. All of the three stars were Ice Flyers with Tyler Soehner being the 3rd star, Ryan Salvis being named 2nd star, and Adam Kuhn's 2 goal performance earning him the 1st star.
The Ice Flyers will be back on the ice in the Hangar tomorrow afternoon as they again take on the Fayetteville FireAntz at 3:05 PM.
