Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The fantastic goaltending performance from Columbus Cottonmouths' goaltender Ian Vigier was all that stood between the Augusta RiverHawks and a perfect weekend, as the Cottonmouths squeaked by the RiverHawks 3-1 Saturday night.
The RiverHawks outshot the Snakes by a 35-23 margin, but Vigier made 34 saves including 11 in the third period to preserve the victory for his club. Augusta's goaltender Peter Skoggard stopped 20 of 22 shots fired at him while taking the loss.
The loss was the first of the toughest weekend schedule of the season for the RiverHawks. The team picked up emotional victories Thursday and Friday night against the second-place Knoxville Ice Bears before playing tonight's game against the third-place Cottonmouths.
The opening period was played to a scoreless draw, giving way to a second frame that was bookended by Cottonmouths' goals. Just past the five minute mark Levi Lind would break the deadlock with his ninth goal of the season, with help from Tom Maldonado and Jordan Braid. The score would remain that way until there was just under four minutes remaining in the period, when the same Columbus line was at it again. This time it was Braid scoring the goal, with assists credited to Lind and Bret Tyler.
The RiverHawks pressed hard in the third period looking to get back in the game, but it was not until late in the game when finally Branden Kosolofsky scored off of a feed from Brendan Taylor. For Kosolofsky the goal was a big one, snapping a 14 game goalless drought.
The just over a minute later the RiverHawks would pull Skoggard in favor of the extra attacker in an effort to tie the game up. However, the Cottonmouths held down the fort, and Sam Bowles sent the puck into the empty net to cap the scoring
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Saturday, March 17th as they play the Cottonmouths. The puck drops at 7:35pm .Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
