Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Lafayette, LA - Behind the goaltending of a former RiverKing, the Louisiana IceGators knocked off the Mississippi RiverKings 3-2 at the Cajundome in Lafayette on Saturday night.
The IceGators got on the board first as Ryan Pearson picked up his first goal of the year on an odd-man rush to beat David Wilson, giving the home-team a 1-0 lead 8:07 into the first period. August Aiken gave Louisiana their second goal two minutes later as his wrist shot from the slot beat the 'Kings' netminder to put the 'Gators up two midway through the first period.
The RiverKings answered back with just 37 second left in the opening frame as Matt Whitehead scored on a Mark Magnowski rebound, beating Jeff Rose to cut the deficit to one heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, Louisiana added an insurance marker as Tyler Lyon scored on a three-on-one. Shawn McNeil and Jason Hill assisted on the IceGators third goal of the night.
The RiverKings cut the 'Gators lead to one in the third period when Jeff Topilko tipped a Leland Fidler shot past Rose 3:44 into the final frame. But the 'Kings could not pick up the equalizer and they fell to Louisiana 3-2.
David Wilson took his second loss in as many starts for the RiverKings as he fell to 12-8-2 on the season. Jeff Rose tallied his first win as a member of the IceGators as he stopped 27 of 29 shots.
The RiverKings and IceGators do battle again on Tuesday night at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana at 7:05. The action can be heard live on Sports 56 and the America One television network.
The RiverKings return home to face the Augusta Riverhawks on March 16 at 7:05 for their final home game of the season. The game will broadcast live on Radio Memphis and the America One television network. For ticket options, call the RiverKings front office at 662-342-1755.
