Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

Pensacola, Fla. - The battle for first place continued Saturday night in Pensacola as the Pensacola Ice Flyers and Louisiana IceGators finished their home-and-home series. Pensacola came away victorious with a score of 5-2 in front of an electric crowd of 4,116.

The IceGators top line went to work early as their leading scorer, Robert Short, beat Ice Flyers goalie, Ross MacKinnon, between the legs. But just eight seconds later, Ryan Raven for Pensacola sent a one-timer past Louisiana goalie, Riley Gill, on a feed from Kevin Kozlowski.

Louisiana went ahead 2-1 2:26 into the second period with a tally from Weston Cydell. Ten minutes later, Ryan Salvis went to work. Salvis scored to tie the game with just under eight minutes left in the period. He stayed on the ice and 47 seconds later, he unloaded a bullet that beat Gill above his glove hand.

Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the second and all the way into the third, but neither team gave an inch.

Then on what seemed to be an innocent play, Jordan Chong circle the Louisiana net, let go of a backhand and put it top corner. This put Pensacola up 4-2 with only 2:18 remaining in regulation time, and brought the Bay Center crowd to their feet.

The IceGators pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Salvis then sent Raven on a clear break, and he made no mistake as he slid the puck into the empty net. This finished the scoring and the Ice Flyers took the game 5-2.

With the victory, the Ice Flyers are now in second place, only one point back of Louisiana with a game in hand.

The IceGators travel to Augusta next Friday and Saturday to play the RiverHawks.

Pensacola hosts Columbus on Friday night, and then the Mississippi Surge on Saturday for their annual Mardi Gras Night with a parade on ice. The festivities start at 4:30 p.m. with a pre-game party on the plaza where red beans, rice and discounted draft beer will be served. The Ice Flyers will be wearing special Saints themed jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game.

Everyone in attendance at Friday and Saturday's game can enter to win a high definition flat screen TV for the Super Bowl, as one will be given away each night.
