Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Pensacola, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers and the Louisiana IceGators began a home-and-home series Friday night in Lafayette, LA. It took a while for a winner to emerge in this game as it finally ended in the 12th round of the shoot out when Ice Flyers' assistant captain Tyler Soehner scored to win the game 2-1.
The Ice Flyers came out of the game and controlled most of the play in the first. They were rewarded 14:20 into the game when Ryan Salvis entered the IceGators zone down the right hand side and wired a shot past the IceGators goalie, Riley Gill.
Louisiana had the edge throughout the second period and it started right out of the gate. Just 1:46 into the second, Cody Zubko fired a shot after his centerman won the draw directly back to his stick and beat Ross MacKinnon in goal for the Ice Flyers.
Both teams exchanged great scoring chances in the third period but neither team was able to score. After five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime, the score was still tied which sent the game to a shoot out.
Ron Cramer was first up for the Ice Flyers and made no mistake, scoring on Gill and giving Pensacola the early lead. IceGator Jordan Foreman was their third shooter and he beat MacKinnon five hole to tie the shoot out. Eight rounds would follow with both goaltenders standing tall and not allowing a goal.
MacKinnon turned aside former Ice Flyer Tyler Lyon in the 12th round, and then Soehner's number was called. He deked Gill and was able to slide the puck throw Gill's five hole, ending the game 2-1 for Pensacola.
Louisiana outshot Pensacola 44-33 and went 0 - 4 on the power play, while Pensacola failed to capitalize on three attempts.
These same two teams face off again Saturday night in Pensacola at 7:05 p.m. on Tom Thumb Ice at the Pensacola Bay Center. The Ice Flyers are hosting Mascot Night and having their annual Teddy Bear Toss in support of the Sacred Heart Children's Hospital.
