
'Kings Drop Sixth Straight to Surge

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings (14-17-5) losing streak extended to five as they fell to their in-state rival the Mississippi Surge (17-13-4) 5-2 on Saturday night at the Landers Center.
The Surge found the back of the net first as Kyle Kudroch scored on a breakaway 12:40 into the first period. The Surge added to the lead four minutes later when Adam Stuart's one-touch shot in front beat Matthew Krahn to take a two-goal lead into the first intermission.
But the RiverKings would tie the game at two in the second period. On the power play, Todd Hosmer beat Kiefer Smiley high blocker side to cut the Surge lead by one. Fifty-three seconds later, also on the power play, Matt Harrington's wrist shot from the blue line tied the game at two 4:53 into the second period. The Surge quickly regained the lead with 7:02 remaining in the period. The one-goal lead came when Reid Emondson beat Krahn short handed left side.
The RiverKings did not convert on any scoring opportunities in the third period. But, the Surge added to their one-goal lead. Stuart collected his second goal of the night with a tic-tac-toe pass from Jay Silvia to beat Krahn at the 8:28 mark of the final period of play. Brandon Kosolofsky sealed the deal for the Surge on a shot from the high slot to give the Surge the 5-2 victory.
Matt Krahn (8-11-2) took the loss after stopping 25 of 30 shots against. Kiefer Smiley (9-9-3) picked up the win stopping 29 of 31 shots against.
In tonight's game, the RiverKings paired up with the United Way of the Mid-South and fred's Super Dollar. Four dollars from every ticket sold was donated and the 'Kings raised over $4,000.
The RiverKings next home game is Tuesday January 29th at 10:35 a.m. The game is the 12th annual Face Off Field Trip game.
