Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. â The Long Beach Ice Dogs lost their first home non-regulation game Saturday, dropping to Idaho 3-2 in the shootout. Long Beach was 3-0-0 at home in the overtime and shootout heading into tonight's contest and 6-0-2 overall. Idaho's David Bararuk, playing in just his second game with the Steelheads, scored both regulation goals and the lone goal in the shootout.
Long Beach (14-25-3) skated fast and hard to open up the game despite playing in its third game in three nights. Jerome Marois stole the puck near center ice and led a two-on-one breakaway with John McNabb in the first period. Marois held the puck looking for the opportune time to pass to McNabb, but the chance never materialized so he shot it himself from the right faceoff circle. The puck sailed past Idaho goaltender Blair Aliison (13-5-3) at 7:52.
A mere 28 seconds later, McNabb stepped in front of a pass in the Idaho zone and blasted a shot to give the Ice Dogs a commanding 2-0 lead at 8:20. Both goals were during a four-on-four session.
Idaho (26-13-5) did not quit, and Bararuk slipped in his first goal of the game when he spun 360 degrees and managed to get his stick on the puck and punch it past T.J. Aceti (7-12-1) at 10:57 in the second frame. His wrist shot from the right side at 2:30 in the third period tied the game at 2-2 and sent the teams to the third overtime in their last three meetings.
Neither team produced many scoring chances in the extra frame, sending the game to the shootout. Both goalies were perfect through the first three rounds, but Bararuk flipped the puck over Aceti's shoulder in the fourth round to give the Steelheads the 3-2 victory. The last four games between Idaho and the Ice Dogs have ended 3-2, with the visiting team winning all four contests.
