I-Cubs Walk off against Memphis

July 4, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (50-37) capitalized on a pair of errors in the ninth inning to talk a walkoff victory over the Memphis Redbirds (35-52) 5-4 in front of a sold-out crowd of 13,367 on Thursday night at Principal Park.

In the second inning, Taylor Davis and Trent Giambrone both reached with two outs. Dixon Machado's first triple of the season scored both players. Iowa extended the lead off Memphis starter Mike Hauschild in the third with an RBI single from Phillip Evans to put Iowa up 3-0.

Memphis' Justin Williams responded in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to get the Redbirds back within a run. In the sixth, Williams gave the Redbirds the lead with his second two-run shot of the game.

Trevor Clifton allowed just three hits through 5.0 frames, but the two home runs held him shy of a quality start. He ended his night at 6.0 innings pitched, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Carl Edwards Jr., Craig Brooks and Rowan Wick (W, 1-0) held the Redbirds hitless in innings seven through nine to hold the deficit at one.

Iowa mounted its comeback in the ninth as Jacob Hannemann reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw. Mark Zagunis drove him in on a fielder's choice before Evans smacked a ball deep to left field to give Iowa the walkoff victory.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Phillip Evans has recorded an RBI in each of his last 10 games.

- Rowan Wick extended his scoreless inning streak in Triple-A to seven games, pitching 1.0 inning in each outing.

- The I-Cubs have matched their 2018 win total with number 50.

Iowa and Memphis clash again tomorrow with a 7:08 p.m. first pitch on Firework Friday at Principal Park. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
