I-Cubs Topple Sacramento 6-1

August 7, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

Brett Jackson had two solo home runs and Scott Moore had two RBI to lead the I-Cubs over Sacramento, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Principal Park.

The River Cats took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Andy LaRoche took a pitch from Iowa starting pitcher Dave Bush and deposited it on the roof of the left field skybox suites.

Iowa wasn't down for long, taking the lead in the home half of the first. Jackson led off the inning with a home run to right field to even the score, and after a Brad Snyder triple, Moore drove a ball to deep center field to score Snyder on a sacrifice fly and give the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

That would be all the scoring Iowa needed, as the Cubs' pitching staff shut down the Sacramento offense the rest of the game.

Bush (1-2, 6.14) went five innings and picked up his first win in five starts with Iowa. He gave up one run on three hits, walked two and struck out two.

Carlton Smith and Blake Parker pitched in relief and did not allow a run. They combined to pitch four innings, gave up three hits, walked none and struck out six. Parker pitched the final two innings of the game and collected his first save of the season.

The I-Cubs added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. After Jackson crushed his second home run on the day, Iowa strung together five straight hits with two outs. Moore hit an infield single and scored on triple from Lou Montanez. Steve Clevenger continued the offensive barrage, driving in Montanez with a single of his own. Matt Spencer and Ryan Flaherty each hit singles to load the bases before Jonathan Mota struck out to end the inning.

Travis Banwart (6-8, 5.07) gave the River Cats a quality start but took the loss. Banwart gave up three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out two over seven innings of work.

Iowa and Sacramento will play game two Monday night at Principal Park. Two southpaws will face each other as River Cats' LH Carlos Hernandez (6-4, 4.46) and Cubs' LH Chris Rusin (1-1, 3.47) are scheduled to start. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
