Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Round Rock, TX - The Tacoma Rainiers turned in some late-inning offense en route to collecting a 12-7 series-opening win over the Round Rock Express at The Dell Diamond on Sunday night,
Tacoma, holding onto a six-run lead, allowed the Express to tie the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning before re-taking the lead with four runs on three hits in the top of the sixth.
First baseman Johan Limonta drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Rainiers an 8-7 edge. Alex Liddi grounded into a force out to stretch Tacoma's lead to two runs and outfielder Carlos Peguero rounded out the inning with a two-out, two-run double.
Outfielder Greg Halman and designated hitter Wily Mo Pena added some extra insurance, delivering RBI-singles in the seventh and eighth innings.
Liddi and Peguero led the Rainiers lineup after each recorded three hits and drove in three runs, with Liddi chipping in a double and belting a two-run home run with one out in the second inning, his team-leading 25th this season.
The third baseman Liddi also scored three runs and is now just one shy of tying Hosken Powell's record of 107 set in 1977 as the most scored in a single season in Tacoma baseball history.
Rainiers starter Erasmo Ramirez (2-0) held the Express to six runs on nine hits over five innings to collect the win, while issuing one walk with one strikeout. Round Rock starter Brett Tomko (5-5) was dealt the loss after surrendering nine runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work.
The Rainiers (58-58) return to action at 5:05 p.m. on Monday night to play the second game of their four-game series with the Express. Left-hander Nate Robertson (3-5, 7.20) is slated to take the mound for Tacoma in the contest against right-hander Eric Hurley (6-0, 3.65) for Round Rock. The game will be broadcast live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and can be streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
